No — it follows the image rectangle (works for any image). If your image is a transparent-background PNG subject, the shadow hugs the opaque parts and looks like it fits the subject.
A transparent background needs an alpha channel, and JPG has none, so a transparent background auto-exports as PNG. To keep JPG, pick a solid background color.
