What is ARW

What is Sony ARW

ARW (Sony Alpha RAW) is the RAW format for Sony Alpha series cameras, built on TIFF/ITU standards to encapsulate raw sensor data. As Sony mirrorless cameras push higher resolutions (the A7R series reaches 60 megapixels), ARW files are known for their rich detail and high resolution.

ARW versions and compression

The ARW format evolves continuously across camera generations (ARW 2.x, 4.x, etc.). Newer models offer Uncompressed, Lossless Compressed, and Lossy Compressed RAW options. Lossy-compressed ARW may show minor artifacts under extreme post-processing. Widantoo detects ARW from actual file content and can develop any version or compression mode.

Sony color

Sony ARW rendering characteristics

Development aims to faithfully reproduce Sony's high-resolution detail and color.

High-resolution detail

Sony's high-megapixel sensors capture abundant detail — developed files hold up to heavy cropping, ideal for commercial and landscape work.

Neutral, slightly cool color

ARW color is neutral with a slightly cool bias and strong post-processing versatility. Default developing tracks the in-camera style as closely as possible.

Files never leave your device

All developing and conversion happens locally. Originals are never uploaded to any server.

RAW vs JPG

What do you lose when converting ARW to JPG

ARW's high bit-depth data is compressed to 8-bit lossy JPG, reducing editing headroom — but the result is entirely sufficient for delivery and sharing.
