What is CR2

What is Canon CR2

CR2 (Canon RAW version 2) is the RAW format Canon has used since 2004 for most EOS DSLRs and early mirrorless cameras. Built on a TIFF container, it encapsulates raw sensor data with no in-camera processing applied. This preserves the full light information captured by the sensor, giving maximum post-processing latitude — but it cannot be opened by ordinary image viewers.

What is the difference between CR2 and CR3?

Canon switched to CR3 on newer models from 2018 onward. CR3 uses the more efficient CR-RAW compression (smaller files) and supports the lightweight C-RAW option. CR2 remains compatible with older cameras and software. Widantoo supports both CR2 and CR3, detecting the format automatically from actual file content — no manual selection needed.

Canon color

Canon RAW rendering characteristics

Development aims to faithfully reproduce Canon's signature color character.

Warm, flattering skin tones

Canon RAW is known for warm, luminous skin tones — especially pleasing for portraits and wedding photography.

Full highlight and shadow detail

CR2 stores 14-bit depth, preserving rich detail in highlights and shadows for maximum post-processing room.

Files never leave your device

All developing and conversion happens locally. Client originals and unedited shots are never uploaded to any server.

RAW vs JPG

What do you lose when converting CR2 to JPG

CR2's 14-bit lossless data is compressed to 8-bit lossy JPG, reducing editing latitude — but the result is entirely sufficient for delivery and sharing.

No. The entire develop and conversion process runs inside your browser. No software installation or account required.

No. CR2 developing and conversion happens entirely on your device. Files are never uploaded, stored, or transmitted.

Default developing aims to reproduce Canon's warm color character. The app prioritizes reading the full-size embedded JPEG preview inside the CR2 (the camera's own develop result), so color is close to the in-camera JPG. Full demosaic developing is handled by a dedicated library.

Yes. Drop the entire set of CR2 files and develop with one click. Individual failures do not stop the batch. Successful results can be downloaded as a single ZIP. Single-file limit is 100 MB, accommodating large RAW files.
