What is DNG

What is DNG

DNG (Digital Negative) is an open, universal RAW container format introduced by Adobe in 2004 with the goal of unifying the fragmented landscape of proprietary RAW formats. It is natively used by Leica, Pentax, Ricoh, and other cameras, widely adopted for smartphone RAW capture (Lightroom Mobile, select Android models), and can be produced by the Adobe DNG Converter from virtually any brand's RAW file.

DNG comes from many sources

Because DNG is a universal container, a DNG file in your hands might have come directly from a camera, been shot on a smartphone, or been converted from another RAW format (CR2/NEF/ARW, etc.). It is especially archive-friendly — the open standard ensures long-term readability. Widantoo detects DNG from actual file content and can develop it regardless of origin.

RAW vs JPG

What do you lose when converting DNG to JPG
