87a and 89a
GIF has two versions: 87a from 1987 is the original; 89a from 1989 added animation, transparency and metadata support — the animated GIFs we see today are 89a.
How GIF Animation Works
GIF animation is simple: multiple still frames are stored in sequence within one file, each with its own display duration, and looping through them creates the animation — essentially a digital flipbook.
Why are animated GIFs so large?
GIF doesn't use inter-frame compression like video; each frame is stored almost independently, so even a slightly longer animation gets big. For the same motion, WebP or short video (MP4) is often a fraction of the size.

Both are used. The creator Steve Wilhite preferred "jif" (like the peanut butter), but most people use a hard g as in "graphics." Dictionaries list both, so either is correct.
