JPG (JPEG) was defined by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992 and is the de facto standard photo format for digital cameras and the web. It uses lossy compression to shrink files dramatically — often to about a tenth of the original data with little visible quality loss.

Why is it everywhere?

Small size, fast loading, and universal device and browser support — combined with efficient compression of colorful photos — make JPG the default for sharing and storing photos. The trade-off is that it's lossy: every re-save discards a little more detail.

Is There a Difference Between JPG and JPEG?

JPG and JPEG are exactly the same format — there is no difference in quality or encoding. The only difference is the length of the file extension.

Why two names?

Early MS-DOS and Windows allowed only three-character extensions, so .jpeg was truncated to .jpg. Mac and Linux had no such limit and kept .jpeg. Today the two are interchangeable — you can rename one to the other freely.
